About

As its name suggests, the River Birch naturally grows along river banks. But as a landscape tree, it can be planted almost anywhere in the U.S. The River Birch has become a favorite and popular landscape tree because of its distinctive peeling, cinnamon-colored bark, and graceful crown. This beautiful species displays wondrous spreading limbs and year-round color standing out in the Fall and Winter. The species is also valued for its relatively rapid growth, tolerance of wetness and drought, and resistance to birch borer and deer. In 2002, one of its cultivars was even named the Urban Tree of the Year by the Society of Municipal Arborists.

Wildlife

Its small but plentiful seeds are appreciated by a wide range of songbirds. The catkins of the River Birch are used by redpolls and pine siskins. The foliage is eaten by deer and other browsers.
