About

The Willow Oak is a member of the red oak group and is a great shade tree. It is also an attractive tree with its long slender leaves. Its beautiful leaves change from light green in the Spring, to a darker green in the Summer months, then yellow and red in the Fall. Its acorns mature in two to three years and are a great food source for wildlife.  When a Willow Oak matures, it becomes a larger, stately tree with a height of 40 to 60 feet.

Wildlife

Besides its beauty, the Willow Oak is a great provider for wildlife. Its acorns are a top food choice for for blue jays, wild turkeys, squirrels, small rodents, whitetail deer, raccoons, and black bears. Deer also browse the buds and twigs in wintertime.

History

This American native became a favorite transplant in Europe. It is believed that Bishop Compton's garden, near Fulham in England, received the first Red Oak transplant abroad in the late 17th century. In 1924, there were over 450 acres of Red Oak plantations in Baden, Germany.
